1831年成立，大部分的校舍集中于曼哈顿下城具有历史色彩的华盛顿广场附近，没有一整体的校园和围墙，而是分散的建筑，建筑上会有紫色旗帜写着NYU或绘有纽约大学的校征(一把火炬)。NYU约有4万三千多位学生，1千两百位的全职师资，师生比1:13，其中海外学生占总学生数5%，著名校友有电影导演奥立佛史东、史帕克李，小约翰甘乃迪，电影明星梅格莱恩，名模Christy Turlington(主修艺术史和东方哲学)，华人也有不少…例如李昌钰，李安，张洪量，马英九，白灵等等
